  1.                     CORNEAL SENSITIVITY MEASUREMENT 
  2.              WITH THE COCHET-BONNET AESTHESIOMETER

  4. The Cochet-Bonnet aesthesiometer 
  5. actually measures the corneal touch 
  6. threshold (inverse of the sensitivity) 
  7. with a variable length nylon filament.  
  8.  
  9. The end of the filament is brought up 
  10. against the corneal surface with a 
  11. force that just gives a noticeable 
  12. bend to the filament.  The patient is 
  13. asked to indicate when they feel the 
  14. probe.  The test is started with longest 
  15. filament possible since the long 
  16. filament will give the least pressure 
  17. as it bends very easily.  If the patient 
  18. does not feel the filament, it is shortened in 0.5 cm steps until it is felt. There should be four to eight touches at each length.  When at least 50% of the touches are felt the test is completed.  The length of the filament is noted and using the conversion chart supplied with the instrument, the reading can be converted into mg./sq. mm.
